The Message of Mary Magdalene ★★★★
There have been many variants of the story of Jesus, but this one is unprecedented.
A story of Jesus from the eyes of Mary Magdalene. It tells a narrative of who Mary (Rooney Mara) is and her vital role as the “key apostle” of Jesus (Joaquin Phoenix). She was a woman of mercy and compassion when she helped people thru the end of their struggles from famine, as well as a woman of strength and courage when she left her family to join Jesus’ crusade to educate and help his people in the whole of Israel.
However, also being a woman, made it unnatural during those times for Mary to join a group of men wandering around the country. She walks at the end of the line, and she caused conflict and divide in the group. These were one of Mary’s struggle as an apostle. She was not entirely welcomed by the other apostles to join them in their journey. Therefore, as soon as Jesus left, they all cast Mary out of the group. Eventually, as years passed the memory of Jesus’ and Mary’s story have become blurred and confusing as evidenced by the Gospels in The New Testament.
This film is one of the most important films in history as it rectifies Mary’s story as well as providing an entirely different angle to one of the oldest tales in history. Ultimately, it carries the vital message that Mary was asked to deliver. “ The world will only change as we change”.
