Maquia, a refreshing reminder ★★★
When mortals attacked people of the lorph clan, a lorph named Maquia managed to escape.
Written and directed by Mari Okada, Maquia is an anime sci-fi fantasy that aims to challenge perspectives of time. It tells a story of a child taking up motherhood. Maquia is an immortal child with ageless appearance who learns about love when she rescues a motherless infant she named Erial. Set in a visually enticing and colourful world of dragons, mortals and lorphs. Also depicting dark and dramatic images of war and conflict brought by greed and lust for power and eternity.
The film has a strong message about sacrifice as a way of showing genuine love and loyalty. Maquia knew that by bringing up Erial, she’ll be devastated in the end. Regardless, she chose to spend some of her years loving and being loved by Erial. Most importantly, beyond the struggles and strains they had together as mother and son. They were all worth it for Maquia.
Maquia is a unique story about time and indifference that teaches a lesson about the value of acceptance and being in the present moment. Everyone spends time differently, but the important thing is to spend most of it with the people you love.
