Minamata ★★★★★
Dark and intense, a gripping story based on actual events that happened in Japan during 1971.
When an esteemed photojournalist named W. Eugene Smith bravely took on a secret mission to document Japan’s Minamata decades-long fight against corruption and greed. It was resulting in thousands of people dying and thousands becoming paralysed.
Minamata captured the very essence of photojournalism through the lens of Smith, who was brilliantly played by Johnny Depp. The film also gave justice to the real story and all the victims of this tragedy.
Most importantly, the cinematography, which Smith’s gallery influenced, is a masterpiece. Many unforgettable scenes and moments, most of them were heartbreaking. Nonetheless, this film will make you feel deeply, and that’s what makes it a rare and beautiful experience.
