Robot Dreams ★★★★
An enchanting French/Spanish hand-drawn animated feature set in an alternate 1984 New York where animals inhabit every citizen role, a solitary dog residing in an apartment seeks companionship by ordering a robot advertised on TV.
Their initial harmony takes a turn during a trip to Coney Island, where a malfunction leaves the robot stranded on the beach. Despite the dog’s valiant efforts to retrieve it, winter arrives, deepening their separation as the robot dreams of being rescued.
This poignant film gracefully explores themes of friendship, loss, and resilience without relying on dialogue. While it garnered an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature, it’s believed to have narrowly missed out to “The Boy and the Heron.”
“Robot Dreams” offers universal appeal, blending soulful storytelling with a nostalgic nod to the 1980s, featuring fluorescent fashion, rollerblades, and TV infomercials. It serves as a reminder of Pixar’s creative heyday, prompting some to reflect on the studio’s current trajectory and yearn for the innovative, heartfelt films of its past.
