Together ★★★

There’s an undeniable authenticity between Franco and Brie, thanks in part to their off-screen connection, but even their genuine chemistry can’t overcome a script that prioritises its outlandish concept over meaningful character development. The film drags in the early going, bogged down by awkward pacing and abrupt tonal shifts from quirky relationship banter to disturbing horror. The comedic beats rarely land, and while the practical effects impress in brief flashes, these moments act as fleeting curiosities rather than foundational elements.

Together never quite finds its footing. The movie lurches between the unsettling and the ridiculous, unable to commit to a singular identity. Its gradual build-up gives way to an abrupt, hasty finale, resulting in a structure that feels uneven and unsatisfying. Attempts to inject dark humor often undercut the gnarly visuals, casting doubt on what the film wants to be.

While the film scores points for its bold use of metaphor to represent codependency, its execution can’t keep pace with its ambitions. The premise intrigues, but thin emotional arcs and reckless tonal shifts diminish its impact. Though both leads deliver strong performances, they are ultimately left adrift in a production unsure of its intentions.

For the adventurous viewer, there’s novelty in what Together tries to accomplish, but the end result is more confounding than captivating: an inventive idea that never quite gels.
