Crazy Rich Asians★★★★

When it comes to love, no one is immune to the complexities and obstacles every couple must face. Not even the wealthy.

Crazy Rich Asians may display a grandeur and luxurious lifestyle throughout the film. However, the story does not revolve around the materialism and extravagance. But tells a story about Asian culture, family and indifference. It focuses on the fusion of different philosophies between the East and West. Through migration and travelling, one’s perspective becomes moulded into something in between two cultures - becoming foreign to the other.  

And this is what happened to both Rachel Chu ( Constance Wu)  and Nick Young (Henry Goulding). Although they are both Chinese by blood, Rachel was born and bred in New York. On the other hand, Henry also studied in the US. There in New York they met and fell in love.

But as all affluent families expect, the business is to be passed on through generations. And there is an unwritten code that all wealthy families connect with all the other affluent families too. This culture means it’s highly preferable to marry people within the wealthy community. And for Rachel to be a Chinese- American immigrant who does not belong to any wealthy family, it is a big deal for Nick’s family.

Crazy Rich Asians as a film is a breakthrough. For so long, there has not been a movie with an all Asian cast that hit Hollywood. And I would say it is very successful. I now get why people are crazy about this film. It’s so much more than the beautiful production, magnificent sceneries, astonishing costume and design and brilliant casting. The whole movie is a life lesson wrapped in lavish packaging. It opens up a world beyond the material world and sends a clear message about what is most important in life.

A definite must-see film of this year. A romantic comedy with a twist of drama and intense confrontations. Truly inspiring and engaging in so many levels.
